The hits just keep on coming for a struggling Woodcreek team that lost its third consecutive game in the Sierra Foothill League, 31-13 to visiting Rocklin High School on Friday night.

Woodcreek (4-4, 0-3 SFL) struggled on both sides of the ball on Senior Night, the last home game of the season for the Timberwolves. The offense gave up chances to score, and the defense couldn’t stop the Thunder’s running game, which totaled 245 yards.

“We were able to do a nice balance of run and pass. … We were able to run the ball on any down, which was nice,” Rocklin coach Greg Benzel said.

Rocklin (6-2, 2-1 SFL) scored four consecutive times between the second and third quarters to take a 31-7 lead.
Marvin Gardner pushed in a 14-yard run for a 14-7 lead with 10:24 remaining in the second quarter for a 14-7 lead the Thunder never let go.

Brian Macdonald had back-to-back scoring runs – of 10 yards and four yards – to give Rocklin a 28-7 lead.

“Sometimes in this league, it’s difficult to come back after a tough loss last week, and it feels good to come back and get another win against a good football team,” Benzel said. “These guys are down a little bit, but they’re much better than 0-3.”

Blake Cervantes ran in from 13 yards for the Wolverines’ final touchdown.

Woodcreek’s first score, with 43 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, came on a one-yard rush by Shaun Mize to tie the game at 7.

“Early on, I felt like we had some things going the first three or four drives and left some points out there,” Woodcreek coach John Hildebrand said. “We were facing a really good football team, and you can’t miss opportunities.”

Woodcreek’s 13 points was its lowest this season.

“They played great D, and we also didn’t execute at times. I just think it’s kind of a combination of the two,” Hildebrand said.

Woodcreek travels to Nevada Union next week, followed by Del Oro to close the regular season.
