Cervantes' 98-yard kickoff return ignites Timberwolves

Led by quarterback Shaun Mize, Woodcreek High School silenced Oakmont in the second half while going on an offensive tear in a 41-20 win over the Vikings on Friday night. Mize passed for two touchdowns and ran for one to propel the Timberwolves at Oakmont’s field.

The Vikings put up a fight during the first half and took a 20-13 lead at the break. Woodcreek had an early score in the third quarter on a 98-yard kickoff return by Blake Cervantes to take a 21-20 lead and never looked back.

“You can’t teach a kid taking it back to the house on the opening kickoff,” Woodcreek coach John Hildebrand said. “That’s determination. That sparked us big-time.”

That got things rolling for Woodcreek, which scored three more touchdowns while holding the host Vikings scoreless.

On its ensuing drive, J.J. Nourth ran six yards for a touchdown to push the Timberwolves’ lead to 28-20 with 6:40 left in the third quarter. Nourth scored his second touchdown of the quarter five minutes later on a four-yard run.

Mize connected with Dylan Zuverink for the second time on a 26-yard pass for the 41-20 final score with 4:43 left in the game.

“We had them on the ropes and we let them go,” Oakmont coach Tim Moore said. “It’s another step in our maturation process. We played better tonight in the first half than we did last week. We came out ready to play. We did some really great things early on. Then we had some critical situations throughout the game that we didn’t capitalize on.”

Oakmont’s offense was lacking in the second half, collecting only two first downs and 76 yards rushing opposed to the 157 it had in the first 24 minutes.

The Vikings fared much better in the first half, capitalizing on a bad play by Woodcreek punter Derrick Kimball. The Oakmont offense started on Woodcreek’s 4-yard line. After three attempts, Justin Caliste found the end zone on a three-yard run for a 6-0 lead.

Mize put his team ahead after controlling a bad snap and running 19 yards for a 7-6 lead.

After a 67-yard play, Jordan Harris finished a drive for the Vikings with a two-yard run five seconds into the second quarter to make it 13-7.

Not to be outdone, Mize threw a short pass to Zuverink for a five-yard score to make it 14-13.

Woodcreek rushed for 310 of its 378 total yards.

Michael Garrison, an Oakmont captain, had a 42-yard dash to his left to find the end zone to make it 20-14.
