Whitebear, Cervantes lead onslaught in 34-point fourth quarter
By Bill Poindexter

Woodcreek High School head coach John Hildebrand said nothing major went on in the locker room at halftime Friday night – no win-one-for-the-Gipper speech, no pleading, no threats.

What was said apparently sunk in with his team. The Timberwolves, already banged up with several injuries to key players, overcame 128 yards worth of penalties and the sting of a touchdown-turned-fumble to start the second half, scored 34 points in the fourth quarter and buried Casa Roble 46-35 in a nonconference football game in Orangevale.

Senior tight end Brandon Whitebear caught three touchdown passes from junior quarterback Shaun Mize: a 48-yarder with 27 seconds remaining in the first half that breathed life into the Timberwolves and a 67-yarder and 56-yarder 54 seconds apart in the fourth quarter that gave Woodcreek a 32-21 lead.

Senior Blake Cervantes, who had his helmet come off twice in the first half and sustained a cut over an eye that Hildebrand said likely would require stitches, on top of playing on a bum ankle, rushed for 156 of his 213 yards in the second half. That included three 20-yard bursts and a 57-yard romp behind a churning offensive line that extended the Timberwolves’ lead to 39-28 with 3:07 left.

And senior safety Dylan Zuverink scored Woodcreek’s first and final touchdowns on interception returns of 42 yards in the second quarter and 80 yards with 2:20 remaining to finish Casa Roble.

“We’ve worked so hard. We’ve been working for seventh months,” said Whitebear, who had five catches for 183 yards. “Our team definitely deserved this win.”

Woodcreek, coming off a 28-21 loss to Lincoln in Week Zero, lost a fumble at the Casa Roble 7-yard line in the first quarter and committed a roughing-the-passer penalty late in the half on a fourth-and-goal play on which the Rams threw incomplete. They scored on the next play to lead 14-6. Those were in addition to several penalties.

The Timberwolves looked like a different team in the second half, taking the kickoff and pounding the Rams behind junior center Cameron Aguirre, 301-pound senior right tackle Kenny Herrera and Whitebear to march 78 yards to the Casa Roble 1 in 12 plays. Mize believed he scored on a one-yard dive, but he also lost the ball, and the Rams took over at the 6.

Woodcreek’s defense, which allowed Rams junior quarterbacks Zach Van Meter and Mitch Samson to pass for 344 yards, held on five plays, forced a punt and drove 55 yards in nine plays. The Timberwolves took their first lead, 18-14, on a three-yard bootleg by senior Ryan Kovach, called upon again to relieve the cramping Mize.

“I told them we didn’t play a very good first half, and it was a two-point ballgame. What we planned to take advantage of is still there. And third, I told our kids, ‘Pour your heart out on the field.’ I told them, ‘Suck it up, and let’s go,’ ” Hildebrand said. “This was a physical football game. The difference between last week and this week is we finished this week.”
